About Sushi

Sushi is one of Japan’s most famous traditional foods and is loved around the world. It refers to dishes made with vinegared rice combined with ingredients such as raw fish, seafood, vegetables, or egg. While many people think sushi simply means raw fish, the most important element is actually the seasoned rice.

Sushi has a long history that dates back over 1,000 years. It originally developed from a preservation method in Southeast Asia, where fish was fermented with rice. This style later evolved in Japan into modern sushi. In the early 19th century, a faster version called nigiri sushi was created in Edo (now Tokyo) by Hanaya Yohei. Nigiri consists of a small hand-formed ball of rice topped with fresh fish or other ingredients and became popular as a quick street food.

There are several types of sushi. Nigiri is rice topped with fish such as tuna, salmon, or shrimp. Maki sushi is rolled sushi wrapped in seaweed with fillings inside. Sashimi is often confused with sushi, but it is simply sliced raw fish without rice. Other varieties include temaki (hand rolls) and chirashi sushi (a bowl of sushi rice topped with various ingredients).

Sushi is deeply connected to Japanese culture because it reflects Japan’s appreciation for seasonal ingredients, freshness, and simple presentation. Many sushi chefs spend years mastering their skills, from selecting fish to preparing rice perfectly.

Today, sushi is enjoyed worldwide, but in Japan, it remains more than just food—it represents craftsmanship, tradition, and the beauty of Japanese cuisine.
