About Daruma

A Daruma is a traditional Japanese doll that symbolizes perseverance, determination, and good luck. It is modeled after Bodhidharma, the Buddhist monk who is believed to have founded Zen Buddhism.

The doll is usually round, red, and hollow, with a distinctive face but blank white eyes. When a person sets a goal, they paint in one eye while making a wish or commitment. Once the goal is achieved, they fill in the second eye to celebrate their success. This tradition makes the Daruma a powerful symbol of persistence and achievement.

The famous Japanese saying “Nanakorobi Yaoki” (fall down seven times, get up eight) is closely associated with the Daruma. Its weighted design allows it to return upright whenever it is knocked over, representing resilience in the face of challenges.

Today, Daruma dolls are commonly displayed in homes, businesses, and schools throughout Japan. They are often purchased at the beginning of a new year, before exams, when starting a business, or whenever someone wants encouragement to pursue an important goal. Because of its strong message of never giving up, the Daruma remains one of Japan’s most beloved cultural symbols.
