About Maiko
A maiko is an apprentice geisha in Japan, mainly found in Kyoto. The word “maiko” means “dancing child,” reflecting their role in preserving traditional Japanese performing arts. They are especially associated with Kyoto’s historic entertainment districts, known as hanamachi (“flower towns”), such as Gion.
Maiko usually begin their training in their teenage years and live in a traditional house called an okiya, where they study various arts under the guidance of senior geisha. Their training includes traditional Japanese dance, music played on instruments like the shamisen, tea ceremony, proper etiquette, and conversation skills. Their goal is to entertain guests at banquets and cultural events through graceful performances and hospitality.
One of the most recognizable features of maiko is their distinctive appearance. They often wear colorful kimono with long sleeves, elaborate hairstyles decorated with seasonal hair ornaments, and white makeup. Their style is generally more vibrant than that of fully qualified geisha, who tend to wear more subtle clothing.
Maiko are considered important cultural symbols of Japan because they help preserve traditional arts and customs that have been passed down for centuries. Today, they continue to attract interest from both Japanese people and international visitors who want to learn more about traditional Japanese culture.
