About Manekineko

A Maneki-neko (beckoning cat) is one of Japan’s most famous lucky charms. It is a cat figurine with one paw raised, as if inviting people to come closer. In Japanese culture, it is believed to bring good fortune, happiness, and prosperity.

Traditionally, a raised right paw is said to attract money and wealth, while a raised left paw is believed to bring customers and visitors. Because of this, Maneki-neko figures are often displayed in shops, restaurants, and homes throughout Japan.

The cat is usually depicted holding a gold coin called a koban, symbolizing wealth. Different colors also carry different meanings. For example, white represents purity and good luck, black is believed to ward off evil spirits, and gold is associated with financial success.

The origins of the Maneki-neko date back to the Edo period (1603–1868), and several legends explain its creation. One popular story tells of a cat that saved a traveler from a lightning strike by beckoning him into a temple.

Today, the Maneki-neko remains a beloved symbol of Japanese culture and is recognized around the world as a sign of good luck and welcoming hospitality.
