Meaning of Kabuto

A kabuto is a traditional Japanese helmet worn by samurai warriors. It was an essential part of their armor, especially during Japan’s feudal period.

Kabuto were designed to protect the head in battle, but they were also highly decorative and symbolic. Many helmets featured elaborate designs, including crests, horns, or ornaments that represented the wearer’s clan, rank, or personal identity.

They were typically made from iron plates riveted together and often included a neck guard (called a shikoro) to protect the back and sides of the head. Some kabuto also had face masks (menpō) attached, which were both protective and intimidating.

Today, kabuto are important cultural symbols in Japan. They are often displayed during Children’s Day (May 5th) to wish for boys’ strength, health, and success in life.
