Meaning of Kabuki

Kabuki is a traditional Japanese performing art that combines drama, dance, and music. It began in the early 17th century during the Edo period and became very popular among ordinary people in Japan.

Kabuki is famous for its colorful costumes, dramatic makeup called kumadori, and exaggerated acting styles. The stories often focus on historical events, samurai, romance, family conflicts, and moral lessons.

Male actors traditionally play both male and female roles, and the female roles are called onnagata. The stage often includes unique features such as a rotating platform and a long walkway called hanamichi, which allows actors to make dramatic entrances and exits.

Today, Kabuki is recognized as an important part of Japanese culture and is enjoyed by audiences from around the world. It is also listed by UNESCO as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
